Notes for Ch 6 Test:
1. After Mexico won its independence from Spain, the Mexical Government closed Spanish missions.
2. Fur Trappers were the first Americans to explore Arizona, opened up the West to other American Settlers, and sold beaver pelts to make tall felt hats.
3. Famous fur trappers included James Ohio Pattie, Pauline Weaver and Old Bill Williams
4. The Mexican War was fought because Mexico was angry about losing Texas to the United States.
5. After the Mexican War, the United States bought a huge chunk of land from Mexico called the Mexican Cession
6. The Gadsen Purchase gave the United States land to build a railroad.
7. Mexico won the Mexican Revolution and then Arizona became part of Mexico.
8. Merchants in Santa Fe wanted to trade their goods for American goods so the Santa Fe trail was made
9. The Mexican government thought trappers would steal Mexican land so they took away trappers furs and supplies.
10. The Mexican War began and Stephen Kearney led the "Army of the West"
11. If I were a mountain man I would have to hunt or fish for food. I would cook the food over an open fire. I would wear animal skins or clothes I traded at a rendezvous. I would also have to fight off animals and Indians.
12. In the Gadsen Purchase compromise the United States got less land than they wanted. Mexico sold the land for less money but kept its land route to the Pacific Ocean.
